If I was the Familiar

If I was the Familiar My family has selected me to be the familiar . What is that? A familiar is someone who has a chip implanted in their brain that receives the thoughts of their fellow family members. As I am to turn 18 soon, I imagine myself becoming like the main character (Cary) of “Caridad,” seeing everything as a vector that can be righted into one straightforward beam. I have written the contributions of each of my family members and a friend in a log-style format. Important things to note before reading the log: “Embeddings” are vectors that contain information about a neural network’s “imagining” of something. Of course, a true embedding within a familiar system would have far more numbers that are not intelligible by conscious understanding, much like image-to-caption models such as CLIP or DINOv2. Every image fed to these becomes an embedding, and every caption (excluding DINOv2) becomes an embedding as well. (Really, there are two neural networks working toget...

Ethical Robot Tasks?

Ethical Robot Tasks: What I Believe They Can and Cannot Do I believe that robots should be allowed to complete many tasks more efficiently than humans. They already do. However, some matters, especially those that are personal, shall not be intruded upon by a robot, even one capable of empathy. If a robot were to take care of a grandmother because her children and grandchildren do not have the time or the resources to effectively take care of her, is the practice of robot senior care ethical? Let’s say that she is in a robot-run retirement home. She can socialize with fellow seniors, but she is dependent on the robots to bring her to the others. Why? Her family signed her up for the cheapest plan: she cannot escape the prying eyes of the robots since privacy costs too much ("free with ads," after all). The robots supervise her every move, and are capable of playing back every second of every day that she has been in the retirement home. Nothi...

District 10?

Here are my thoughts as to what might happen in the sequel to District 9, District 10: District 10 is a gulag-style camp that will provide a majority of South Africa’s electrical energy supply. The prawns are forced to construct a powerful geothermal source that uses the flow of mantle convection currents to generate electricity. The machinery is capable of withstanding up to approximately 10,000 degrees Celsius, according to tests by Multi National United (or MNU, for short). Politicians claim that they are “working with the prawns, marking a new era in renewable energies and advanced technologies.” Advertisements show supposedly happy prawn children living in District 10, playing on designated playground equipment, but many suspect that it is staged. Yet human rights activists have a hard time proving that MNU’s treatment of the prawns violates the constitution of South Africa or the United Nations’ Charter on Human Rights, since many view...
