If I was the Familiar

If I was the Familiar

My family has selected me to be the familiar. What is that? A familiar is someone who has a chip implanted in their brain that receives the thoughts of their fellow family members. As I am to turn 18 soon, I imagine myself becoming like the main character (Cary) of “Caridad,” seeing everything as a vector that can be righted into one straightforward beam. I have written the contributions of each of my family members and a friend in a log-style format.

Important things to note before reading the log:

“Embeddings” are vectors that contain information about a neural network’s “imagining” of something. Of course, a true embedding within a familiar system would have far more numbers that are not intelligible by conscious understanding, much like image-to-caption models such as CLIP or DINOv2. Every image fed to these becomes an embedding, and every caption (excluding DINOv2) becomes an embedding as well. (Really, there are two neural networks working together to make one vector). Both of these are compared by their cosine-similarity, which sees how similar the given image is to the caption, or vice versa. A caption can also be generated from an image this way. A familiar embedding, judging by the level of complexity of the human neural network, would most likely have an uncountable number of parameters. For this post, I kept the vector parameter count down to (at minimum) 3 for clarity. Also, I gave the familiar system the ability to add parameters later in the final vector. For a true system like this, variable parameter counts would not be the case. I imagine some kind of AI taking the neural inputs of every family member and turning those into fixed vectors, which are much more efficiently normalized, especially once quantum computing becomes a thing. The final vector would then get translated back into brain signals, to make the family’s decision.

All vectors have parameter values from -1.0 to 1.0.

Here is the prompt that is circulating in the system right now: Where should I lean in American politics, left or right? Whom might I vote for in the next election? List any potential candidates you believe may run for election. What is your opinion on the American election process?

“[no vectors present]” means that the member of the system has not specified any potential candidates for the next election.

How do vectors come into play here? Because my family is making a single decision, every member’s input must be translated into an embedding. All of these embeddings are normalized (averaged) to form a final vector (my family’s decision). Those that are mathematically-inclined may be wondering how I will calculate the variable parameters. Each member (node) will come up with a potential candidate for the next election. These candidates will not be consistent for each member. I will show the process of averaging later, and I think you will get it.

:I would choose Democrat, but I am dissatisfied that there are only two parties that have a real chance at gaining seats in Congress. I perceive the elections to be like Yin and Yang. Excluding presidential reelections, the Democrats and Republicans seem to be elected every other term.:

Opinion: American elections are hardly representative of the general consensus of the populace. I believe that a winner-takes-all system is very unfair, because either party barely needs a majority of votes to win an entire state. Even as a left-leaning person, I think that the Democratic and Republican parties alike are harming democracy in this country by “representing” too many people and further polarizing politics (making it so that nothing gets done).

Candidates:

:I’m not sure, but the Republicans would not choose J.D. Vance. For the Democrats, maybe Pete Buttigieg? I think they should, but I don’t think they will.:

J.D. Vance -> -1.0

Pete Buttigieg -> 0.0

Opinion: I think American elections are highly flawed because there are only two parties that hardly represent any positions that the average person would have. This polarization is also a major factor in the inequality gap in the United States.
